2by those who draw [it] out gently,

    3by those who swim smoothly,

4by those who, racing, take the lead,

5by those who direct the affairs [of creatures]:

6the day when the Quaker quakes

7and is followed by the Successor,

8hearts will be trembling on that day,

    9bearing a humbled look.

10They will say, ‘Are we being returned to our earlier state?

11What, even after we have been decayed bones?!’

12They will say, ‘This is, then, a ruinous return!’

13Yet it will be only a single shout,

14and behold, they will be awake.

15Did you receive the story of Moses,

16when his Lord called out to him in the holy valley of Tuwa?

17[And said,] ‘Go to Pharaoh, for indeed he has rebelled,

18and say, ‘‘Would you purify yourself?

19I will guide you to your Lord, that you may fear [Him]?’’ ’

20Then he showed him the greatest sign.

    21But he denied, and disobeyed.

22Then he turned back, walking swiftly,

23and gathered [the people] and proclaimed,

24saying, ‘I am your exalted lord!’

25So Allah seized him with the punishment of this life and the Hereafter.

26There is indeed a moral in that for someone who fears!

27Is your creation more prodigious or that of the heaven He has built?

28He raised its vault and fashioned it,

29and darkened its night, and brought forth its forenoon.

30Thereafter He spread out the earth,

31brought forth from it its water and pastures,

    32setting firm the mountains,

33as a [place of] sustenance for you and your livestock.

    34When the Greatest Catastrophe befalls

35—the day when man will remember his endeavours

36and hell is brought into view for those who can see—

37as for him who has been rebellious

38and preferred the life of this world,

39his refuge will indeed be hell.

40But as for him who is awed to stand before his Lord and restrains his soul from [following] desires,

41his refuge will indeed be paradise.

42They ask you concerning the Hour, “When will it set in,

43considering your frequent mention of it?”

44Its outcome is with your Lord.

45You are only a warner for those who are afraid it.

46The day they see it, it shall be as if they had not stayed [in the world] except for an evening or forenoon.
