Surah Al-Mutaffifin

Defrauding · Meccan · 36 Ayahs

1Woe to the defrauders, who use short measures,

2who, when they measure [a commodity bought] from the people, take the full measure,

3but diminish when they measure or weigh for them.

4Do they not know that they will be resurrected

    5on a tremendous day,

6a day when mankind will stand before the Lord of all the worlds?

7Indeed, the record of the vicious is in Sijjeen.

8And what will show you what is Sijjeen?

    9It is a written record.

10Woe to the deniers on that day,

    11who deny the Day of Retribution;

12and none denies it except every sinful transgressor.

13When Our signs are recited to him, he says, ‘Myths of the ancients!’

14No, that is not the case! Rather, their hearts have been sullied by what they have been earning.

15Indeed, they will be alienated from their Lord on that day.

    16Afterward they will enter hell,

17then told, ‘This is what you used to deny!’

18Indeed, the record of the pious is in Illeeyun.

19And what will show you what is Illeeyun?

    20It is a written record,

21witnessed by those brought near [to Allah].

22The pious shall be amid bliss,

23observing, [as they recline] on couches.

24You will perceive in their faces the freshness of bliss.

25They will be served with a sealed pure wine,

26whose seal is musk—for such let the viers vie—

27and whose seasoning is from Tasneem,

28a spring where those brought near [to Allah] drink.

29Indeed the guilty used to laugh at the faithful,

30and when they passed them by they would wink at each other,

31and when they returned to their folks they would return amused,

32and when they saw them they would say, ‘Indeed those are the astray!’

33Though they were not sent to watch over them.

34So today the faithful will laugh at the faithless,

    35observing from their couches:

36Have the faithless been requited for what they used to do?
