Surah Al-Balad

لَا͏ٓ اُقْسِمُ بِهٰذَا الْبَلَدِ ۝١ۙ

1I swear by this town,

وَاَنْتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهٰذَا الْبَلَدِ ۝٢ۙ

2as you reside in this town;

وَوَالِدٍ وَّمَا وَلَدَ ۝٣ۙ

3[and] by the father and him whom he begot:

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْاِنْسَانَ فِيْ كَبَدٍ ۝٤ؕ

4certainly We created man in travail.

اَيَحْسَبُ اَنْ لَّنْ يَّقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ اَحَدٌ ۝٥ۘ

5Does he suppose that no one will ever have power over him?

يَقُوْلُ اَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا ۝٦ؕ

6He says, ‘I have squandered immense wealth.’

اَيَحْسَبُ اَنْ لَّمْ يَرَهٗٓ اَحَدٌ ۝٧ؕ

7Does he suppose that no one sees him?

اَلَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَّهٗ عَيْنَيْنِ ۝٨ۙ

8Have We not made for him two eyes,

وَلِسَانًا وَّشَفَتَيْنِ ۝٩ۙ

9a tongue, and two lips,

وَهَدَيْنٰهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ ۝١٠ۚ

10and shown him the two paths [of good and evil]?

فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ ۝١١ؗۖ

11Yet he has not embarked upon the uphill task.

وَمَا͏ٓ اَدْرٰىكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ ۝١٢ؕ

12And what will show you what is the uphill task?

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ ۝١٣ۙ

13[It is] the freeing of a slave,

اَوْ اِطْعٰمٌ فِيْ يَوْمٍ ذِيْ مَسْغَبَةٍ ۝١٤ۙ

14or feeding, during days of [general] starvation,

يَّتِيْمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ ۝١٥ۙ

15an orphan among relatives

اَوْ مِسْكِيْنًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ ۝١٦ؕ

16or a needy man in desolation,

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِيْنَ اٰمَنُوْا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ ۝١٧ؕ

17while being one of those who have faith and enjoin one another to patience, and enjoin one another to compassion.

اُولٰ࢜ىِٕكَ اَصْحٰبُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ ۝١٨ؕ

18They are the People of the Right Hand.

وَالَّذِيْنَ كَفَرُوْا بِاٰيٰتِنَا هُمْ اَصْحٰبُ الْمَشْـَٔمَةِ ۝١٩ؕ

19But those who defy Our signs, they are the People of the Left Hand.

عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُّو͏ٔ͏ْصَدَةٌ ۝٢٠ࣖ

20A closed Fire will be [imposed] upon them.
