Praise be to Allah, Whose pleasure lies in seeking Him,

wa iltimāsi mā ladayhi wa sakhaṭuhu fī tarki l-ilḥāḥ

and in seeking what is with Him, and whose wrath lies in abandoning persistence

fī l-mas'alati ʿalayh, wa subḥāna llāhi shāhidu kulli najwā

in supplication to Him. Glory be to Allah, the Witness of every secret conversation,

biʿilmihī, wa mubā'ini kulli dhī jismin binafsih

through His knowledge, and distinct in His Essence from every corporeal being,

wa lā ilāha illā llāhu alladhī lā yudraku bil-ʿuyūni

and there is no god but Allah, Who cannot be perceived by eyes

    wal-abṣāri, wa lā yujhalu bil-ʿuqūli wal-albābi

and sights, and He is never unknown to intellects and understanding minds.

    wa yukhlaqu mina ḍ-ḍamīr

and He is conceived within the inner conscience,

and He knows the treachery of the eyes and what the breasts conceal.

wa llāhu akbaru l-mutajallilu ʿan ṣifāti l-makhlūqīn

Allah is the Greatest, exalted above the attributes of created beings,

fully aware of what is in the hearts of all creation.

and I plead to You with the pleading of a drowning man who hopes for the removal of his distress,

wa abtahilu ilayka ibtihāla tā'ibin min dhunūbih

and I implore You with the imploring of one repenting from his sins

wa khaṭāyāhu, wa anta r-ra'ūfu alladhī malakta l-khalā'iqa

and his errors. You are the Most Kind, Who possesses all creation,

kulluhum, wa faṭartahum ajnāsan mukhtalifāti l-alwāni

all of them, and You created them in different kinds and colors,

wal-aqdāri ʿalā mashī'atika, wa qaddarta ājālahum

and destinies, according to Your will, and You determined their lifespans

wa arzāqahum, fa lam yataʿāẓamka khalqu khalqin

and their provisions, and the creation of no creature was too great for You,

ḥattā kawwantahu kamā shi'ta mukhtalifan mimmā shi'ta

until You formed it as You willed, differing from what You willed for another,

fa-taʿālayta wa tajabbarta ʿani ttikhādhi wazīrin

So You are exalted and mighty, beyond taking any minister,

    wa taʿazzazta ʿan muwāzarati sharīkin

and You are mighty, beyond needing the assistance of a partner,

    wa tanazzahta ʿani ttikhādhi l-abnā'i

and You are pure, beyond having sons,

    wa taqaddasta ʿan mulāmasati n-nisā'i

    Eyes cannot perceive You,

    wa laysati l-awhāmu biwāqiʿatin ʿalayk

    nor can imaginations grasp You;

wa laysa laka sharīkun wa lā niddun wa lā ʿadīlun

You have no partner, no rival, and no equal,

wa lā naẓīrun, wa anta l-fardu l-wāḥidu d-dā'imu

nor any likeness. You are the Single, the One, the Everlasting,

    al-awwalu l-ākhiru wal-ʿālimu l-aḥadu ṣ-ṣamadu

the First, the Last, the All-Knowing, the One, the Eternally Besought,

al-qā'imu alladhī lam talid wa lam tūlad

the Self-Subsisting, Who neither begets nor is begotten,

wa lam yakun laka kufuwan aḥadun

and there is none comparable to You.

lā tanālu biwaṣfin wa lā tudraku biwahmin

    You cannot be attained through description, nor grasped by imagination;

wa lā tughayyiruka fī marri d-duhūri ṣarfun

and the passage of ages does not change You.

kunta azaliyyan lam tazal wa lā tazālu

You have always been eternal, ever-existing, and will remain forever,

    wa ʿilmuka bil-ashyā'i fī l-khafā'i

and Your knowledge of things in their hidden state

    kaʿilmika bihā fī l-ijhāri wal-iʿlāni

is like Your knowledge of them when open and declared.

    fayā man dhallat liʿaẓamatihi l-ʿuẓamā'u

So, O He before Whose greatness the greatest are humbled,

    wa khaḍaʿat liʿizzatihi r-ru'asā'u

and before Whose might the leaders bow down,

wa man kallat ʿan bulūghi dhātihi alsunu l-bulaghā'i

and the tongues of the eloquent fall short of describing His Essence,

    wa man aḥkama tadbīra l-ashyā'i

and He Who perfected the management of all things,

wastaʿjamat ʿan idrākihi ʿibāratu ʿulūmi l-ʿulamā'i

and the expression of scholars' knowledge fails to comprehend Him:

yā sayyidī, a-tuʿadhdhibunī bin-nāri wa anta amalī

O my Master, will You punish me with the Fire while You are my hope,

aw tusalliṭuhā ʿalayya baʿda iqrārī bit-tawḥīdi

or set it upon me after my acknowledgment of Your Oneness,

wa khuḍūʿī wa khushūʿī laka bis-sujūdi

and after my submission and humility toward You through prostration,

    aw tulajliju lisānī fī l-mawqifi

or will You make my tongue falter at the standing before You,

wa qad mahhadta lī bimannika subula l-wuṣūli

while You have paved for me, through Your grace, the paths to reaching You,

    ilā t-tasbīḥi wat-taḥmīdi wat-tamjīdi

toward glorification, praise, and exaltation of You?

fayā ghāyata ṭ-ṭālibīna wa amāna l-khā'ifīna

O Ultimate Goal of seekers, and Security of the fearful,

wa ʿimāda l-malhūfīna wa ghiyātha l-mustaghīthīna

Support of the distressed, and Aid of those seeking help,

wa jāra l-mustajīrīna wa kāshifa ḍurri l-makrūbīna

Protector of those who seek refuge, and Remover of distress from the afflicted,

wa rabba l-ʿālamīna wa arḥama r-rāḥimīna

Lord of the worlds, and the Most Merciful of the merciful!

ṣalli ʿalā muḥammadin wa āli muḥammadin

send blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

wa tub ʿalayya wa albisnī l-ʿāfiyata

accept my repentance, and clothe me in well-being,

    warzuqnī min faḍlika rizqan wāsiʿan

and grant me from Your bounty an abundant provision,

    waj'alnī mina t-tawwābīna

and make me among those who constantly repent.

allāhumma in kunta katabtanī shaqiyyan ʿindaka

O Allah, if You have recorded me among the wretched with You,

    fa-innī as'aluka bimaʿāqidi l-ʿizzi min raḥmatika

then I ask You by the bonds of honor from Your mercy,

    bil-kibriyā'i wal-ʿaẓamati l-latī lā yuqāwimuhā aḥadun

and by the majesty and greatness which none can resist,

an tuṣalliya ʿalā muḥammadin wa āli muḥammadin

that You send blessings upon Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad,

    wa an tuḥawwilanī saʿīdan

and that You transform me into one of the fortunate,

    fa-innaka tujri l-umūra ʿalā irādatika

    for indeed, You conduct all affairs according to Your will;

wa tujīru wa lā yujāru ʿalayk

    and You grant protection, while none can grant protection against You;

wa anta ʿalā kulli shay'in qadīrun

and You have power over all things.

    wa anta r-ra'ūfu r-raḥīmu l-khabīru

and You are the Most Kind, the Most Merciful, the All-Aware,

taʿlamu mā fī nafsī wa lā aʿlamu mā fī nafsika

    You know what is within my soul, while I do not know what is within Yours;

    innaka anta ʿallāmu l-ghuyūbi

indeed, You are the Knower of the unseen.

falṭuf bī, faqadīman laṭufta bimusrifin ʿalā nafsihi

So be gentle with me, for You have long been gentle with one who wronged himself,

famnun ʿalayya, faqad mananta ʿalā gharīqin

so bestow Your favor upon me, for You have bestowed favor upon one drowning,

    fī buḥūri khaṭī'atin hā'iman

wandering lost in oceans of sin,

    aslamathu lil-ḥutūfi kathratu zalalihi

whom the multitude of his slips had delivered to destruction.

wa taṭawwal ʿalayya, yā mutaṭawwilan ʿalā l-mudhnibīna

and be generous with me, O You Who are generous with sinners,

    biṣ-ṣafḥi wal-ʿafwi

    with pardon and forgiveness,

    fa-innaka lam tazal ākhidhan bil-faḍli ʿalā l-khāṭi'īna

for You have never ceased to deal graciously with wrongdoers,

    waṣ-ṣafḥi ʿalā l-ʿāthirīna

and with pardon toward those who stumble.

wa man wajaba lahu bijtirā'ihi ʿalā l-āthāmi

And what of one for whom, through his boldness in committing sins,

    ḥulūla dāri l-bawāri

dwelling in the abode of ruin has become due —

    yā ʿālima l-khafiyyāti wal-asrāri

O Knower of hidden things and secrets,

    yā jabbāru yā qahhāru

    O Compeller, O Subduer,

wa mā alzamtanī min farḍi l-ābā'i wal-ummahāti

And whatever obligations You have placed upon me regarding fathers and mothers,

wa wājibi ḥuqūqihim maʿa l-ikhwāni wal-akhawāti

and their obligatory rights, along with those of brothers and sisters,

faḥtamil dhālika ʿannī ilayhim wa addihi

bear that on my behalf toward them and fulfill it,

    yā dhā l-jalāli wal-ikrāmi

O Possessor of Majesty and Honor,

    waghfir lil-mu'minīna wal-mu'mināti

and forgive the believing men and women,

    innaka ʿalā kulli shay'in qadīrun

indeed, You have power over all things.
