Friday Dua (Imam Ali A.S)

Friday

Listen

    Bismi-llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīm

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Al-ḥamdu lillāhi alladhī lā min shay'in kāna wa lā min shay'in

Praise be to Allah, Who came to be from nothing, and from nothing

kawwana mā qad kāna, mustashhidun biḥudūthi l-ashyā'i ʿalā azaliyyatihi

brought into being what has come to be — bearing witness, through the coming-into-being of things, to His own eternity,

wa bimā wasamahā bihi mina l-ʿajzi ʿalā qudratihi wa bimā

and, through the weakness with which He marked them, to His power, and through what

aḍṭarrahā ilayhi mina l-fanā'i ʿalā dawāmihi, lam yakhlu minhu makānun

He compelled them toward — namely decay — to His permanence. No place is empty of Him,

fayudraka bi-ayniyyatihi, wa lā lahu shibhun wa lā mithālun fayūṣafa

so that He could be grasped through a location; nor has He any likeness or example by which He could be described

bikayfiyyatihi, wa lam yaghib ʿan shay'in fayuʿlama biḥaythiyyatihi, mubā'inun

in terms of a mode; nor is He absent from anything so that He could be known through a state — distinct

lijamīʿi mā aḥdatha fī ṣ-ṣifāti, wa mumtaniʿun ʿani l-idrāki bimā

in attributes from all that He originated, and beyond being grasped through what

ibtadaʿa min taṣarrufi dh-dhawāti, wa khārijun bil-kibriyā'i wal-ʿaẓamati min

He invented in the changing states of essences, and He stands outside, through majesty and greatness, of

jamīʿi taṣarrufi l-ḥālāti, muḥarramun ʿalā bawāriʿi thāqibāti l-fiṭani taḥdīduhu

all the changing of states. Forbidden to the finest, sharpest minds is the defining of Him,

wa ʿalā ʿawāmiqi thāqibāti l-fikari takyīfuhu, wa ʿalā ghawāmiḍi

and to the deepest, most penetrating thoughts is the assigning of Him a mode, and to the hidden depths of

sābiqāti l-fiṭari taṣwīruhu, wa lā taḥwīhi l-amākinu liʿizzatihi

    the earliest inborn natures is the picturing of Him. Places do not contain Him, owing to His might;

mustashhidun bikulliyyati l-ajnāsi ʿalā rubūbiyyatihi, wa biʿajzihā

He bears witness through the totality of created kinds to His Lordship, and through their weakness

ʿalā qudratihi, wa bifuṭūrihā ʿalā qidmatihi, wa bizawālihā

to His power, and through their being brought forth to His pre-eternity, and through their passing away

ʿalā baqā'ihi, falā lahā maḥīṣun ʿan idrākihi iyyāhā

to His permanence. So they have no escape from His encompassing knowledge of them,

wa lā khurūjun ʿan iḥāṭatihi bihā, wa lā iḥtijābun

no exit from His encircling them, and no concealment

ʿan iḥṣā'ihi lahā, wa lā imtināʿun min qudratihi

from His counting them, and no resisting His power

ʿalayhā, kafā bi-itqāni ṣ-ṣunʿi lahu āyatan wa bitarkībi

over them. Sufficient as a sign of Him is the precision of His craftsmanship, and as proof, the composition

aṭ-ṭabʿi ʿalayhi dalālatan, wa biḥudūthi l-fiṭari ʿalayhi qidamatan

of nature within it; and as antiquity's proof, the coming-into-being of inborn dispositions,

wa bi-iḥkāmi ṣ-ṣanʿati ʿalayhi ʿibratan, falā ilayhi ḥaddun

and the precision of the craft, a lesson pointing to Him. So no limit

mansūbun, wa lā lahu mathalun maḍrūbun, wa lā shay'un

is ascribed to Him, no likeness is struck for Him, and nothing

ʿanhu bimaḥjūbin, taʿālā ʿan ḍarbi l-amthāli lahu

is veiled from Him. He is exalted above the striking of likenesses for Him

wal-ṣifāti l-makhlūqati ʿuluwwan kabīran, wa subḥāna llāhi

and above created attributes, greatly exalted. Glory be to Allah,

    alladhī khalaqa d-dunyā lil-fanā'i wal-buyūdi wal-ākhirata

Who created this world for perishing and passing away, and the Hereafter

lil-baqā'i wal-khulūdi, wa subḥāna llāhi alladhī lā yanquṣuhu

for permanence and eternity. Glory be to Allah, Whom

mā aʿṭā fa-asnā, wa in jāza l-madā fī l-munā

what He gives does not diminish — rather it grows more sublime — even if aspirations extend far in their reach,

wa balagha l-ghāyata l-quṣwā, wa lā yajūru fī ḥukmihi

and reaches the furthest extreme; and He does not deviate from justice in His judgment

idhā qaḍā, wa subḥāna llāhi alladhī lā yuraddu mā qaḍā

when He decrees. Glory be to Allah, Whose decree cannot be repelled,

wa lā yuṣrafu mā amḍā, wa lā yumnaʿu mā aʿṭā

whose execution cannot be diverted, whose bestowal cannot be withheld,

who does not err, does not forget, and does not hasten — rather He grants respite,

pardons, forgives, shows mercy, and is patient. He is not questioned

ʿammā yafʿalu wa hum yus'alūna, wa lā ilāha illā llāhu

about what He does, while they will be questioned. There is no god but Allah,

to His rope. There is no god but Allah, the Responder to whoever

nādāhu bi-akhfaḍi ṣawtihi, as-samīʿu liman nājāhu

calls Him even in the lowest of voices, the Hearer of whoever confides in Him

lam tazal sayyidī wa lā tazālu

You have ever been, my Master, and ever will be,
