Surah Al-Muddaththir

The Cloaked One · Meccan · 56 Ayahs

1O you wrapped up in your mantle!

    2Rise up and warn!

    3Magnify your Lord,

    4and purify your clothes,

5and keep away from all impurity!

6Do not grant a favour seeking a greater gain,

7and be patient for the sake of your Lord.

8When the Trumpet will be sounded,

9that will be a day of hardship,

10not at all easy for the faithless.

11Leave Me [to deal] with him whom I created alone,

12and furnished him with extensive means,

13[gave him] sons to be at his side,

14and facilitated [all matters] for him.

15Still he is eager that I should give him more.

16No indeed! He is an obstinate opponent of Our signs.

17Soon I will overwhelm him with hardship.

    18Indeed he reflected and decided.

    19Perish he, how he decided!

20Again, perish he, how he decided!

    21Then he looked;

    22then frowned and scowled.

    23Then he walked away disdainfully,

24saying, ‘It is nothing but traditional sorcery.

25It is nothing but the speech of a human.’

26Soon I will cast him into Saqar.

27And what will show you what is Saqar?

28It neither spares, nor leaves [anything].

    29It burns the skin.

30There are nineteen [keepers] over it.

31We have assigned only angels as keepers of the Fire, and We have made their number merely a stumbling block for the faithless, and so that those who were given the Book may be reassured, and the faithful may increase in [their] faith, and so that those who were given the Book and the faithful may not be in doubt, and so that the faithless and those in whose hearts is a sickness may say, ‘What did Allah mean by this description?’ Thus does Allah lead astray whomever He wishes and guides whomever He wishes. No one knows the hosts of your Lord except Him, and it is just an admonition for all humans.

    32No indeed! By the Moon!

33By the night when it recedes!

34By the dawn when it brightens!

35Indeed they are one of the greatest [signs of God]

    36—a warner to all humans,

37[alike] for those of you who like to advance ahead and those who would remain behind.

38Every soul is hostage to what it has earned,

39except the People of the Right Hand.

40[They will be] in gardens, questioning

    41the guilty:

    42‘What drew you into Hell?’

43They will answer, ‘We were not among those who prayed.

44Nor did we feed the poor.

45We used to indulge in [profane] gossip along with the gossipers,

46and we used to deny the Day of Retribution

    47until death came to us.’

48So the intercession of the intercessors will not avail them.

49What is the matter with them that they evade the Reminder

50as if they were terrified asses

    51fleeing from a lion?

52But everyone of them desires to be given unrolled scriptures [from Allah]!

53No! Indeed, they do not fear the Hereafter.

54No! It is indeed a reminder.

55So let anyone who wishes be mindful of it.

56And they will not be mindful unless Allah wishes. He is worthy of [your] being wary [of Him] and He is worthy to forgive.
